Abstract: | Dr Horace A. Barker was born and raised in California. He obtained his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1933, and became a faculty member at the same campus in 1936. He devoted his research to the study of bacterial metabolism. His contributions include the detailed studies of various aspects of metabolism such as synthesis and oxidation of fatty acids, fermentation of amino acids and purines, and carbohydrate transformations. He isolated and determined the structure and function of some enzymes and coenzymes from bacteria. He also specifically described many anaerobic metabolic pathways. Dr Barker retired in 1976. |
