Categories, Detection Techniques and Applications of Bacterial Volatile Metabolites

Bacterial volatile metabolites (BVMs) are important components of metabolites of bacteria, and closely associate with bacterial life activities and their growing amount, they are important information substances for bacteria to communicate with the surrounding various organisms. Categories and characteristic features of BVMs are complicated, it needs and depends special techniques to analyze and test them, because they are in low concentration, large categories, and having great span from polarity to non-polarity. In this paper the category of common BVMs was summed up, and introduced gas chromatography mass spectrum and electronic nose these two methods for determining volatile organic compounds, exemplified the potential applications of BVMs detection in medical and food research fields, and proposed some crucial problems in BVMs detection study.
