Abstract: | Summary Maltose transport in S. cerevisiae was inhibited by ethanol and other alkanols in a non-competitive way. The Michaelis constant, Km, for the sugar, with or without alkanols was 5.9 mM, whereas the maximum trans port capacity, Vmax, decreased exponentially with alkanols concentration. The inhibitory capacity was positively correlated with the lipid solubility of the alkanols, indicating that inhibition is due to an alteration of the lipid environment of the maltose transport system in the plasma membrane. |
