Abstract: | The propagation of a transverse disturbance along a tubular membrane enclosing a fluid medium and embedded in another is considered. It is shown that the velocity of propagation of such a disturbance can be identified with the velocity of the conduction process of thin-sheathed nerve fibers. The required values of the associated parameters, tension and pressure, appear not unreasonable. The results obtained indicate that experimental observations on the relation between the conduction velocity and the fiber diameter, as well as the effects of longitudinal stretching and transverse squeezing on the velocity of the conduction process in nerve, may be correlated on such a basis. |
