Abstract: | Pseudomonas aeruginosa mucoid strains as well as mutants defective in pili, flagella, lipopolysaccharide, and proteases were isolated and tested for their virulence for the larvae of Galleria mellonella. Of all of the mutants, only the lipopolysaccharide-deficient (rough) strain showed a major decrease in virulence when compared to the wild type. The LD50 of the rough strain was about 30,000 bacteria/larva or roughly 10,000-fold higher than the wild type, suggesting an important role for the lipopolysaccharide in P. aeruginosa infections of G. mellonella larvae. |
