Abstract: | Three of eight esterases separable by acrylamide gel electrophoresis of homogenates of central nervous tissue from Acheta domesticus are true acetyl cholinesterases as determined by substrate preference and inhibition with eserine. A major portion of the three cholinesterases occurs in a form which is activated by treatment with the detergent Triton X-100. Triton X-100 has been shown to release bound hydrolases from vesicles, e.g. lysosomes, but in this case may be liberating acetyl cholinesterase from the cell surface where it has been demonstrated by recent electron microscope studies. |
