Abstract:Cores of repacked soil were consolidated with a compressive strength testing machine, after peas had been planted in the centre of the core. The number that emerged were counted and root and shoot lengths and diameters were measured. Consolidation had no effect on emergence, root length or root diameter of the peas grown in a loamy sand, whereas emergence, root length and root diameter were affected by a small increase in load in a clay loam.
