Abstract:
Many microorganisms secrete enzymes which ensure their penetration into the host cells. Phospholipases belong to this type of molecules capable to derange or destroy cell surface membranes. Recent data from in vitro and in vivo studies establish the role of phospholipases as virulence factors. Except direct cytolytic effect the enzymes express effect on some immune responses. The increased incidence of antibiotic resistance needs new therapeutic approaches for treatment of infections. Phospolipases represent a promising target for development of a novel class of therapeutics with divergent mechanism of action.
