Abstract:A procedure has been developed for the sequential extraction and purification of the peptide and alkaloid toxins from a single batch of Anabaena flos-aquae cells. After solvent extraction and adsorption onto C18 Sep-Pak cartridges, the cyanobacterial toxins were purified by high-performance thin-layer chromatography and identified by scanning with a densitometer. The purified components were tested separately by mouse bioassay. Liver damage and nervous disorder were induced by the two peptide and single alkaloid toxins, respectively.
