| Abstract: | A study was made of the sterols in normal and virus-infected tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum, var. Samsun). Analysis by gas liquid chromatography and thin-layer chromatography indicates that the major sterols present are cholesterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol. Although the sterol fraction varies qualitatively and quantitatively with plant part, virus infection does not appear to have any effect on sterol biosynthesis or distribution. |
