| Abstract: | The standard method for counting phytoplankton requires 2448h of settling (Utermöhl, 1931). The modified Utermöhlmethod (plunger) described here reduces settling time to 2 h.Estimates of counts for phytoplankton using the plunger methodplotted against counts from the Utermöhl method yield agood correlation (r2 = 0.97), and 95100% of species (>2µm) recorded in the Utermöhl method were recordedwith the plunger method. |
