Mechanism of oxidation of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-2,3-dihydropyridinium (MPDP+)

Abstract:Oxidase electrode measurements have shown that the neurotoxin metabolite 1-methyl-4-phenyl-2,3-dihydropyridinium autoxidizes to hydrogen peroxide and 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium in a reaction promoted by iron chelates. The mechanism of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine toxicity is discussed in the light of these findings.
