Infection of 31-week Leghorn layers with WPDV 205 strain of egg-drop syndrome virus could" reproduce the typical production curve of egg drop syndrome but without any change in egg-shell quality. Egg yield fell from 68.4% in the second week postinoculation to 43.5% in the fourth week postinoculation. Radiotracing demonstrated that in the first week p.i. virus was distributed in the ovary, as well as the magnum, isthmus and vagina regions of the oviduct, in the second week p.i. in the lungs and magnum, in the third week p. i. in the vagina, in the fourth week in the kidney as well as the infundibulum, isthmus, vagina regions of the oviduct. Except one instance in which virus was detected in the vagina in the eighth week p. i., no virus could be detected in the reproductive tract after the fourth week p. i. . No evidence of virus could be found in the uterus ( shell-gland ) during the entire experimental period. The presence of virus could be detected in the contents of eggs laid by hens from the first to the fourth week after inoculation of virus.
