Abstract: | Summary Freeze-fracture replicas of hagfish gill epithelium revealed orthogonal arrays of 6-nm particles in the basolateral plasma membrane of pavement cells. The arrays consisted of 4–16 particles and occupied an area of 340±170 nm2. These particle arrays, which are considered to be sites of ionic leakage, possibly contribute to the regulation of the pericellular micromilieu of adjacent mitochondria-rich cells. |
