Abstract: | Plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum from cisco (Coregonus artedii) and whitefish (C. clupeaformis) and of Diphyllobothrium latum from pike (Esox lucius) and walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) were collected at Quigly Lake, Manitoba. Adult tapeworms were obtained by experimental infection of hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) and were used to verify species identity. Isozyme analysis showed no differences between adult and plerocercoid stages. The enzymes esterase and malate dehydrogenase differed between species. Comparison of DNA restriction fragment profiles showed species specific differences, as did Southern hybridization analysis using nematode ribosomal gene probes. |
