| Abstract: | The medium and conditions which permit in vitro culture of immature tassels of Zea mays cv. Oh43 are reported. Final fresh weight, total number of spikelets and the number of normal spikelets were enhanced by optimal concentrations of sucrose (0.3 M), kinetin (10–7 M) and casein hydrolysate (30 mg l–1) when added to the Murashige and Skoog salts, White's vitamins and glycine and inositol. A single cultured tassel produces up to 200 normal spikelets which contain anthers bearing germinable pollen. |
