Abstract:Hydrocortisone increases rat liver tryptophan oxygenase mRNA activity as measured by a translational assay. Pretreatment of rats with cycloheximide thirty minutes before hydrocortisone administration largely prevents the hormonal induction of tryptophan oxygenase mRNA. Tryptophan oxygenase mRNA activity begins to increase after a lag of at least 30 to 60 minutes after hydrocortisone injection. These results suggest that the synthesis of intermediary protein(s) is required for the induction of tryptophan oxygenase mRNA by glucocorticoids.
