Selection for increased vernolate tolerance in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) cell cultures

Vernolate (S-propyl N, N-dipropylthiocarbamate) has been used to select thiocarbamate-tolerant tobacco cell lines. Cross-tolerance to other thiocarbamate herbicides was observed. Tolerance was initially unstable in the absence of continued selection, but shoot regeneration produced plants in which some tolerance was stably expressed. Morphological abnormalities in the regenerated plants are described.
