Abstract:The pheromone antheridiogen promoted the production of males in gametophyte populations of the fern Ceratopteris richardii. Two homozygous strains of this species exhibited markedly different sensitivities to the pheromone, resulting in populations with either high or low frequencies of males. The two strains were characterized by dose responses to antheridiogen and by gametophyte population density studies to investigate the effect of antheridiogen produced within cultures. Analyses of Fl hybrids and an F2 generation indicated that differences in the antheridiogen responses of the two parental strains are associated with either one or two nuclear genes.
