Abstract: | Tolerance to Verticillium wilt is found in a wild relative of eggplant, Solanum torvum. To transfer this tolerance to eggplant (S. melongena), protoplast fusions between eggplant and irradiated S. torvum protoplasts were performed. Putative hybrids were regenerated and evaluated for Verticillium tolerance and field value. A total of 12 plants were eventually selected to be incorporated into the breeding program, as
they showed a high degree of Verticillium tolerance under field conditions combined with the morphological characters of eggplant, including normal seed set. DNA analysis
showed one of these tolerant plants to have a changed pattern, with some changes corresponding to specific pattern characteristics
of S. torvum.
