Periodate oxidation of 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-β-D-glucopyranosyl residues

Thirty-two substituted phenyl β-D-galactopyranosides were hydrolyzed in 0.1M aqueous hydrochloric acid at different temperatures. Rate coefficients and kinetic parameters were determined. Influences of the substituents were investigated by linear free-energy relationships and the Leffler—Exner isokinetic relation. Only electronic effects operate. Some ortho-substituents have a rather complex influence on the reaction.
