Abstract: | Loss-of-function mutations of the pendrin gene are responsible for a pathology characterized by dysfunctions of thyroid and inner ear. However, it rapidly appeared after its discovery that the anion exchanger encoded by this gene plays a central role in kidneys. This brief review pictures the evolution of our knowledge regarding renal functions of pendrin, with a special emphasis to its recently identified roles in the maintenance of sodium homeostasis and blood pressure. |
