Abstract: | Macrophages activated to the tumoricidal state can recognize and destroy neoplastic cells and leave normal cells unharmed. Systemic activation of macrophages can be achieved by the intravenous administration of liposomes containing various immunomodulators. Much like any particle, liposomes are cleared from the circulation by phagocytic cells. This passive but specific targeting of immunomodulators to macrophages results in their activation forin vitro andin vivo lysis of tumor cells that can be resistant to conventional therapies. |
