Abstract: | The induction of an antiviral response in cultured Aedes aegypti cells was compared with that in duck embryo fibroblasts using 32P-labeled double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) from reovirus and poly(rI-rC). Although A. aegypti cells could incorporate a comparable amount of dsRNA (80%), no antiviral response was observed. Further studies using poly(rI-rC) under conditions shown to be optimal for vertebrate cells failed to give positive results. An attempt in Bombyx mori larvae to measure a cellular response to foreign material (a coliphage) injected into the hemocoel resulted in the persistence of the virus for at least 8 days. |
