Abstract: | Direct (muscimol) or indirect (aminooxyacetic acid, diaminobutyric acid, pyrrolidinone) GABA-mimetic compounds significantly potentiate neuroleptic induced catalepsy in rats. In contrast at subconvulsant doses, direct (bicuculline, picrotoxinin and indirect (allylglycine) GABA antagonists antagonized haloperidol-induced catalepsy. The effect of bicuculline and picrotoxinin was biphasic with the lowest doses increasing catalepsy. These results indicate that GABA mechanisms are involved in the induction of catalepsy by neuroleptics. |
