Increases in endo-1,4-β-d-glucanase titres produced by Aspergillus fumigatus through application of simple statistical methods

Yields of endo-1,4-β-d-glucanase cellulase, 1,4-(1,3;1,4)-β-d-glucan 4-glucanohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.4] produced by Aspergillus fumigatus IMI 255091 in shake flask cultures have been improved through application of a form of evolutionary operation incorporating a standard factorial design. This approach gave considerable improvements in yield, up to the point at which the limitations of the shake flask technique were noticeable. Further improvements then resulted from use of a 5 litre disc-turbine agitated fermenter.
