Abstract:High-level vision such as object and face perception can be dramatically and persistently improved by intensive training. This phenomenon, termed perceptual learning of complex stimulus, has been considered to reflect the plasticity of human high-level visual cortex. However, the neural mechanism underlying object and face perceptual learning is still controversial. Here we reviewed the theoretical models and experimental evidence of perceptual learning. Importantly, we discussed the behavioral properties, neural mechanisms and research methods of object and face perceptual learning. At the end of the review, future directions in this field were mentioned, including the persistence of learning, the neural mechanism of learning of different face attributes, and the theoretical models of perceptual learning of complex stimulus.
Keywords:perceptual learning  high-level visual cortex  plasticity  neural mechanism
