Long-term feeding of concentrate fumigated with carbon tetrachloride to sheep

Growing male lambs and female sheep were fed for several months on concentrate fumigated with carbon tetrachloride. Residues of 100 ppm CC1₄ drastically reduced concentrate consumption. At the level of 35 ppm growth was proportional to the diminished intake. The concentrate containing 20 ppm did not affect growth, sexual development or reproductive activity of sheep of either sex. The acceptable daily intake of CC1₄ is about 0.7 mg/kg body weight. It is concluded that cereals fumigated with CC1₄ for insect control may be used, after thorough airing, for sheep feed.
