Abstract: | Summary A method is described for isolating sterol mutants of the filamentous fungus, Neurospora crassa. Most of the mutants carry gene mutations affecting the later stages of ergosterol biosynthesis and they accumulate other, as yet unidentified, sterol components but two mutants are blocked earlier in the pathway and respond to exogenous mevalonic acid. Altered sterol metabolism is associated with a reduced rate of growth, abnormal morphology, poor fertility and resistance to a variety of polyene antibiotics. |
