Abstract: | Males ofChironomus yoshimatsui Martin et Sublette swarm at dusk, and copulate with females entering the swarm. It is likely in this species that, by restricting
the time and place, swarming has the function of increasing the probability of the encounter between a sexually active male
and a receptive female in the air. It is necessary that the timing of females taking wing coincides with that of males swarming.
Field observations on swarming and mating from March to November showed that swarms and copulations occurred under lighter
conditions at lower temperatures and under darker conditions at higher ones. It was suggested that both sexes may have a similar
mechanism, depending on the temperature conditions, regulating the timing of taking wing. |
