Abstract: | The presence of simple benzyltetrahydroisoquinolines in Aniba species, known for their varied phenylpropanoid chemistry, is reported. Since other genera in the Lauraceae contain, in contrast, quite elaborate alkaloidal types, a regulating mechanism may exist by which phenylalanine is channelled either into phenylpropanoids or into benzylisoquinolines. This mechanism is evoked in order to rationalize chemical evolution in the Magnoliidae. |
