Abstract:As well as historical achievements of theoretical study of negative binomial distribution and its applications to analyze spatial pattern of insect populations, this paper reviews recent development of the subject with ten sections: On spatial patterns of insect populations and their probabilistic and statistical models; Definition and Prevailing expressions of negative binomial distribution; Genesis of the distribution; Moment generative function,probability generating function; related generating function and moments; Calculation and transformation concerned to the distribution; Methods to estimate the parameters; Estimation and applications of common k and common p; Relation to binomial, Poisson, gamma and some compound distributions; Simulation for numerical experiments of the distribution; Problems of its application9 with discussion about confusion and vagueness in fitting sampling data to the distribution.
