STUDIES ON PHYSIOLOGYCAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES DURING POSTHARVEST RIPENING PERIOD OF TOMATO FRUITS
Abstract:There were dramatic rises of respiration and ethylene production during postharvest ripening period of tomato fruits and also during the aging period of preclimacteric tomato fruit discses, the rise of ethylene production always preceded the respiratory rise. The developments of induced respiration, KCN-insensitive respiration and wound-induced ethylene production were all inhibited strongly by chloramphenical, cycloheximide, actinomycin D and 5-fluorouranicl. The zymogrames and activities of peroxidase, malate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase isozymes were all changed, and new isozyme bands appeared during the climacteric period in tomato fruits. These results showed that the onset of climacteric, induced respiration and ethylene production are all related to protein synthesis.
