Abstract:Arrays of cortical microtubules (MTs) on radial walls in differentiatingtracheids of Taxus cuspidata were randomly oriented when primarywalls formed. The orientation of MTs changed progressively fromlongitudinal to transverse as cells expanded. During formationof primary walls, MTs in differentiating tracheids disappearedlocally at sites of future intertracheal bordered pits. In furtherdifferentiated tracheids, circular bands of MTs were observedaround the edges of developing bordered pits. (Received July 17, 1996; Accepted November 11, 1996)
