Abstract:The effect of migration inhibitory factor (MIF)-rich Sephadex fraction IV (55,000–25,000 daltons) on the level of macrophage cyclic AMP has been investigated. Macrophage monolayers were incubated with MIF for times ranging from 1 min to 24 hr. During this period no significant difference was found in the level of cyclic AMP in monolayers incubated with MIF or control fractions. It is concluded from these results that the inhibition of macrophage migration by MIF is not due to a direct alteration of macrophage cyclic AMP levels by MIF.
