Abstract: | Summary Two human hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines were grown in athymic mice. Morphologically, the tumors resembled hepatocellular carcinomas. HBsAg, anti-HBs, and -fetoprotein were detected in sera of mice bearing tumors of PLC/PRF/5 or Hep 3B cells; their amounts correlated with tumor weight. Tumors of both cell lines were infected with cell culture-adapted hepatitis A virus (HAV); HAV antigen and infectious virus were recovered from infected tumors of PLC/PRF/5 and Hep 3B cells. Our results indicate that HAV-infected tumors may be useful in studying the production in vivo of hepatitis A virus antigen. |
