Abstract: | Culture medium made hypertonic by the addition of osmotic stabilizers such as sucrose, poly(ethylene glycol), dextran and bovine serum albumin protected against changes in morphology and plasma membrane permeability induced by Clostridium perfringes enterotoxin. The protection did not appear to be due to binding inhibition. Results of these studies support an osmotic disruption mechanism for the action of the enterotoxin. A comprehensive model of the enterotoxin's action based on an osmotic disruption mechanism is proposed. |
