Experiments (20- and 100-day) on rats showed that decrease of the animal motor activity with preserved static function of the extremities led to a marked thinning of the cortical layer of the femoral bone. However, the ability of the whole bone to bear mechanical load decreased but slightly. An increase in the firmness of the bone tissue as a result of its mineralization compensated for the cortical layer thinning.
