| Abstract: | Preceding stereotypical left-right asymmetric morphogenesis, asymmetric gene expression patterns of nodal and pitx2 are very similar in major groups of vertebrates. I propose that these conserved expression patterns are indicative of 'left-right' phylotypic stages' of development. It is not known whether these patterns are initiated by conserved or divergent developmental mechanisms. |
