郧县人遗址发现的石制品

THE STONE ARTIFACTS FROM THE YUNXIAN MAN SITE

The present article deals with the stone artifacts from the Yunxian Man site at Quyuanhekou, in Yunxian county, Hubei province. The stone industry is characterized by: 1) free hand hammering method predominates in flaking, 2) the presence of pitted pebble or cobble indicates the possibility of using the bipolar technique; 3) no systematic preparation can be observed on the talons of flakes, but there are a few cores with faceted platform or multifaceted platform; 4)the pebble or cobble tools predominate in the tool combination; 5)choppers and chopping tools are main types. There are bifacially worked pointed cobble tools in the collected specimens, one of them is reminiscent of partial hand-ax. In addition a scraper made on a flake with a null striking platform ( talon nul ) was found in the collected specimens. The associated mammalian fossils show a mixed trait of both north and south faunas of the transitional region in China. The presence of Tertiary survival and typical Early Pleistocene forms demonstrates the age of Yunxian Man may be referred to the late Early Pleistocene, by and large corresponding to that of Lantian Man at Gongwangling, Lantian in Shaanxi province.
