Abstract: | An automated method of glycine analysis is described that is based on the ninhydrin oxidation of glycine to formaldehyde, which is then subjected to condensation by the Hantzsch reaction with acetylacetone and ammonia to form the fluorescent product, 3,5-diacetyl-1,4-dihydrolutidine. The method is applicable to biological fluids and has been shown to be adaptable to the analysis of glycine in blood spotted on filter paper. This innovation should prove to be particularly valuable in detection of disorders associated with hyperglycinemia in newborn infants. |
