| Abstract: | The toxic effects of ouabain were compared in normal, and in 6-OH-DA and reserpine pretreated rats. Reserpine significantly reduced the lethality of intravenous ouabain. This effect does not seem related to depletion of peripheral catecholamines, since 6-OH-DA did not reduce mortality significantly. Since reserpine, but not 6-OH-DA, does cross the blood brain barrier it is suggested that the protective effect of reserpine might be related to its action on the central nervous system. |
