Abstract: | The cyclical transmission of a West African stock of Trypanosoma vivax by Glossina morsitans morsitans and G. m. centralis was studied. It was possible to transmit this parasite amongst rabbits, rats, mice and goats. Whereas goats and mice succumbed to the disease very rapidly, rats and rabbits showed scant and transient parasitaemia and frequently suppressed the infection. A trypanosome challenge using single infected tsetse showed that goats became infected much more readily than mice. The infected vector can transmit the infection throughout its life but not at every feed. |
