Abstract: | RNA was extracted from chicken erythrocytes and analysed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and sucrose gradient centrifugation. 4S RNA and heavy RNA (greater than 45S) predominated and only a little ribosomal RNA was detectable. When RNA extraction and analysis followed incubation of the isolated erythrocytes with tritiated uridine, much of the label appeared in the 4S and heavier-than-45S areas. Actinomycin D at a concentration of 10 μg/ml gave substantial reduction of incorporation of both tritiated uridine and leucine into incubated erythrocytes, suggesting a continued dependence on RNA synthesis for the residual protein synthesis occurring in these cells. |
