Abstract: | A vesicular membrane system was prepared from peripheral nerve of the crab Callinectes sapidus, which had ATP-dependent, oxalate enhanced Ca2+ uptake properties similar to mammalian skeletal and cardiac muscle microsomal fragments. This same preparation had a high level of Na+-K+-activated ATPase. In vitro Na+ caused the release of bound Ca2+ and simultaneously stimulated the Na+-K+-activated ATPase system suggesting a relationship between these two systems in the control of nerve excitability. |
