Abstract: | The taxonomic identity of predominant bacteria in laboratory-scale anaerobic-aerobic activated sludge systems and their capacity for accumulating polyphosphate (polyP) were investigated. All bacterial isolates accumulated appreciable amounts of polyP under tested conditions, although only 7% of them were positive for the volutin stain. The isolates showing the most pronounced polyP accumulation and volutin formation were the unidentified Gram-positive bacteria containing menaquinone—10. Some other strains of Gram-positive bacteria and menaquinone-containing Gram-negative bacteria also formed volutin granules. |
