Abstract: | Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) was administered to female rhesus monkeys in order to determine the effects of adrenal axis activation on the endocrine events occurring during the menstrual cycle. ACTH injected twice daily during the follicular period and through the time of expected ovulation was found to prevent the rise of estrogens during the follicular phase. In addition, the ACTH administration also blocked the preovulatory surge of LH, prevented the luteal rise of progesterone, and extended the length of the menstrual cycle. |
