Abstract: | The effects in growth room experiments of three levels of 2-chloroethyltrimethylammonium chloride (chloromequat chloride; CCC) at two nitrogen levels were studied on a tall rice variety and a mutant dwarf derivative. CCC was found to reduce plant height in both varieties, to increase tiller number and spikelet number on the main panicle or in total but to delay flowering. Chemical dwarfing cannot be regarded as an alternative to genetic dwarfing since mutants may be shorter than chemically treated tall genotypes and may themselves respond favourably to further treatment. |
