Abstract: | Iron storage proteins, ferritin and haemosiderin, release iron to a range of chelators and reducing agents, including citrate, acetate and ascorbate. Released iron promotes both hydroxyl radical formation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation in liposomes. Ferritin protein is modified in such reactions, both by free radical cleavage and addition reactions with aldehyde products of lipid peroxidation. |
