Endogenous prostaglandin E2 synthesis inhibits growth of polyoma virus-transformed 3T3 fibroblasts.

Indomethacin lowered the cellular content of adenosine 3 ′: 5 ′-monophosphate (cAMP) and stimulated growth of polyoma virus-transformed 3T3 fibroblasts. Exogenous prostaglandin E₂, at concentrations produced in the absence of inhibitor, reversed the effects of indomethacin on cAMP levels and cell proliferation. Therefore, endogenously produced prostaglandin E₂ decreases cell growth and raises the levels of cAMP in these cells.
